Santiago de Cuba was founded in 1515. It was the capital city of the country until 1589. It is Cuba’s second largest city and also the capital city of Santiago de Cuba province. Historically it has been considered the second most important city on the island after Havana. It is located some 870 kilometers (540 miles) south-east of the Cuban capital.
