Ruben Martinez Villena Provincial Library, a palace for books

Sancti Spiritus’s Ruben Martinez Villena Provincial Library is located in one of the most beautiful buildings of Sancti Spiritus, the former El Progreso Society headquarters.

It is a lovely palace that stands out next to Serafin Sanchez Park, within the historic area of the town.  It holds valuable collections of books and other kind of texts, many of which are donations from former owners.

Libraries first appeared in Sancti Spiritus after the introduction of the printing press, but it was not until October 10th, 1917, that the first public library was opened.

On December 30th, 1963, the former El Progreso Society was officially constituted into Ruben Martinez Villena library.
